Selected from more than 400 submissions around the country, Alex Bell's winning performance is an extraordinary "thank you" to her grandmother for her tireless love and support. The 19-year-old New Jersey native submitted an emotional tribute to her late grandmother Veronica, who was diagnosed with dementia in 2010. "You Are My Sunshine" was Veronica's favorite song and despite her advanced dementia — which left her unable to recognize her loved ones at times — the sound of her granddaughter singing the song triggered her memory.
"My grandma cared through it all – she was there to see me succeed and support me when I failed," said Bell. "When I was a kid, I took a lot of the little things she did for granted, so it's great to be able to finally thank her."
